WHAT IS ZINC PLATING

Zinc plating, also known as galvanization, is a process where a thin layer of zinc is applied to the surface of steel or iron to protect it from corrosion. Zinc acts as a sacrificial coating, meaning it corrodes before the underlying metal does, thereby extending the life of the material being protected.

There are two common methods of zinc plating:

  1. Electroplating: In this method, an electric current is used to deposit zinc onto the surface of the metal. The object to be plated is immersed in a solution containing zinc salts, and the electrical current causes zinc ions to bond with the surface.

  2. Hot-dip galvanizing: In this method, the steel or iron is dipped into a bath of molten zinc, which forms a thick and durable coating.

Zinc plating is commonly used for items like fasteners, automotive parts, and household appliances to prevent rust and corrosion from environmental exposure.
